Differences between Shinto Shrines and Buddhist Temples
Shinto Shrine
- Religion: Shinto (indigenous Japanese religion)
- Deities: Eight million gods (nature, ancestors, etc.)
- Building features: Torii gate, shimenawa rope, bells
- How to worship: Two bows, two claps (to make a wish to the gods)
- Purpose: Make wishes, pray, ward off misfortune (place to make requests)
- Characteristics: Red torii gates, white streamers as markers
Buddhist Temple
- Religion: Buddhism
- Deities: Buddha
- Building features: Buddha statues, bells, main gate
- How to worship: One bow, put hands together, pray quietly (no clapping)
- Purpose: Ancestor memorials, Buddhist practice, seeking peace of mind (place for memorial and learning)
- Characteristics: Calm and solemn, impression of Buddha statues and incense scent
③ Correct Way to Use Temizu (Purification Water)
Steps to Purify Yourself Before Worship
- ① Hold the ladle with your right hand
→ Scoop some water.
- ② Wash your left hand
→ Pour water over your left hand.
- ③ Wash your right hand
→ Switch the ladle to your left hand and pour water over your right hand.
- ④ Rinse your mouth
→ Pour a small amount of water into your right hand and rinse your mouth (do not touch the ladle directly with your lips).
→ After rinsing, wash your right hand again.
- ⑤ Finally, cleanse the handle of the ladle
→ Let the remaining water flow gently down the handle.
→ Return the ladle to its original place.
