Japanese Etiquette Guide
③ Store Etiquette
- Entering: Wait for the staff to guide you.
- Shoes: In izakayas, Japanese restaurants, and inns, remove shoes where required. Align them neatly.
- Seating: Do not sit randomly; staff will guide you. Fast food and cafes usually have self-service seating.
- Ordering: Call the staff with “Sumimasen” or use the call button.
- Meal etiquette: Say “Itadakimasu” before eating and “Gochisousama” after. Use chopsticks properly. Leaving food is generally discouraged, but it is allowed if portions are too large.
- Payment: Usually at the register. No tipping culture; do not give extra money. Placing cash on the tray is common.
- Others: Avoid phone calls. In convenience stores and supermarkets, line-up culture is strong; do not cut in line.
